OrderPaperToday – At midway into the 9th Senate, record shows that the three senators from Edo state have made a contribution of 5 motions and petitions as part of their legislative duties.
Sen. Matthew Aisagbonriodion Urhoghide (PDP) represnting Edo South senatorial district sponsored one motion and petition each.
Urhoghide, in his motion, addressed the urgent need to remove the difficulty faced by Nigerians outside the shores of Nigeria in renewing their passports.
He appealed to the Senate to mandate the committee on interior; and foreign affairs “to engage the ministries of both the interior and foreign affairs; the Comptroller General of Immigration with Ambassadors/Consular Offices of the countries specifically indicted to consider amongst other measures; making it possible to renew passport and travel documents abroad by post and increasing the number of centers where passport can be renewed abroad.”
He equally moved for “the removal of the existence of middlemen and to hold regular and or periodic assessment the activities of Nigeria’s foreign missions.”
Similarly, Urhoghide sponsored a petition against Union Homes Savings and Loans for payment of total sum lodged in their fixed deposit account of one Venerable Peter Elakhe Ayeni.
Like Urhoghide, Sen. Clifford Akhimienmona Ordia (PDP) representing Edo central senatorial district sponsored one motion and petition each.
His motion was on the urgent need to combat the high rate of infant deaths caused by pneumonia in the country. He convinced the Senate to urge the Federal Ministry of Health “to launch a massive vaccination program to arrest this killer disease; and that the ministry through its relevant agencies to make available amoxicillin DT antibiotics to Health Centers round the country to treat infection.”
He equally sponsored a petition against Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation for alleged wrongful dismissal of one Mrs. Mariel Rae-Omoh from the service.
Sen. Francis Asekhame Alimikhena (APC) representing Edo north senatorial district sponsored only one petition, while recording zero performance in motions.
He sponsored a petition against FRSC for alleged wrongful termination of appointment of one RC Khanoba Aliyu Yunusa.
On a global scale, the three senators from the state have sponsored 1.4% and 0.8% of the motions and petitions sponsored in Senate at midterm.
However, on bill sponsorship Alimikhena led the state at midterm.
