OrderPaperToday – The three Senators from Akwa-Ibom State have so far sponsored a total of 4 motions and 5 petitions in the first half of the 9th Senate.
Sen. Akon Etim Eyakenyi (Akwa Ibom South), the only female Senator from the State sponsored 2 motions each, while Sen. Bassey Albert Akpan (PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East) and Sen. Christopher Stephen Ekpenyong (Akwa Ibom North-West) sponsored 1 motion each.
Similarly, Akon Etim and Akpan has sponsored 1 and 4 petitions respectively, while Ekpeyong, Akpabio’s replacement in 2019 elections has no record of petition sponsorship during the period under review.
Key among the petitions by Akpan was one against Nigeria Navy for alleged victimization of one Captain Emmanuel Ekpen Owen and another against the appointment of one Mr. Effiong Akwa as an Ag. Executive Director of NDDC.
While one of his motions was on the “urgent need to reform the Housing Policy and Mortgage Financing in Nigeria to meet the escalating housing demand in the country.”
He had urged the Senate to “mandate the Committee on Housing to urgently work out modalities with the various stakeholders in the National Housing Development Sector to ensure the implementation of affordable housing population and most especially the poorest Nigerians”
Similarly, the only petition by Akon was against Maritime Academy, Oron for alleged wrongful termination of one Mr. Samuel Sunday Duncan’s appointment, while one of her motions was on ‘the urgent need to address the sorry state of computer education by providing training for teachers and basic computer facilities in public schools’.
She urged the Federal Government and all Stakeholders in the Education sector to address the sorry state of education by providing computer training for teachers in public schools and basic computer facilities for the proper training of pupils and students in computer knowledge.
In the single motion sponsored by Ekpeyong, he addressed the deplorable condition of the Ikot Ekpene Umuhia and Aba-Ikot Ekpene highways linking Akwa Ibom and Abia States, and urged the Federal Government through the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to expedite actions on intervention measures to salvage the road from total collapse.
The motions and petitions sponsored by Akwa Ibom Senate team constitutes 2.8% and 1.3% of the motions and petitions sponsored in the first half of 9th Senate.
Meanwhile, of the three Senators from Akwa-Ibom State, Ekpeyong and Akon Etim had maintained poor performance on bill sponsorship in the period under review.
