Abia, a state in the south-eastern part of Nigeria, has Umuahia as the capital. Nicknamed as ‘God’s own state,’ Abia was created in 1991 from the old Imo State.
The name “Abia” is derived from the initial letters of four highly populated areas within the state: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo. Abia State comprises seventeen (17) Local Government Areas. It has three senatorial districts and eight federal constituencies.
It is currently governed by Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP) who emerged as the eleventh governor of the state in 2023.

Senator Abaribe Eyinnaya Harcourt
By 2027 Sen. Abaribe would have served 20 years in the Senate. The 69-year-old lawmaker is currently serving his fifth term as Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly. Although he began his legislative journey under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Abaribe is now in the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). Senator Akobundu Augustine Okwudiri
Akokundu is a first-time senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District in the 10th Senate. Born on the 10th of March, 1957, Akobundu is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and had served as south-east zonal vice chairman of the party. Senator Orji Uzor Kalu
Sen. Kalu is serving his second term as the senator representing Abia North Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He served as Chief Whip of the Senate and Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions in the 9th Assembly.
