Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu was born May 5, 1971, in Bende, Abia State. He is currently serving his second term as a Member of the House of Representatives, having won a seat in the 2023 National Assembly elections. The lawmaker representing Bende Federal Constituency was elected as the Deputy Speaker House of Representatives following the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.
Before joining politics in 1992 at the age of 21, Hon. Kalu served as the National President of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Diaspora Chapter. At the age of 31, in 2002, he served as the youngest Local Government Chairman of Bende Local Government Area, Abia State. His next public service portfolio was Senior Special Adviser on local government and chieftaincy affairs (2007-2009) to the then Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu. He later became the Senior Special Adviser to the governor on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and International Relations (2009-2010).
Hon. Kalu joined mainstream politics in 2002 by contesting for the House of Representatives primaries and lost. In 2011 and 2015, he contested for the same seat and also lost. The tide however turned in his favour, when on February 23 2019, he won the election under the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Kalu would be appointed to serve as the Spokesperson of the House of Representatives in his capacity as Chairman, Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
Over the years, Hon. Kalu has demonstrated commitment, capacity and dedication in various roles and organizations in both the private and public sectors, including his personal entities. His competencies include project development, marketing and media relations, fundraising, and diplomatic liaison and immigration advisory services, which is a core service delivered by his law firm, Silk Partners LLP. He has also excelled in human resources management, competitive analysis, market intelligence, positioning strategies, global marketing, organization studies, international business strategy, and information systems, among others, making him a valuable asset in any professional setting.
Hon. Kalu held significant roles in multiple organizations including directorial positions and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) roles. He also served as the Team Leader that managed the fundraising team dedicated to addressing the Sudan Darfur Crisis in Australia.
Throughout his journey, Hon. Kalu has embarked on various educational pursuits. He possesses a strong educational background, holding qualifications from Nigeria Law School (Call to Bar), Chartered Institute of Arbitrators United Kingdom (CIARB), and various certifications related to environmental crimes, governance, migration, and human rights.
His affiliations encompass notable organizations such as OSHAssociation UK, Chartered Institute of International Arbitrators (CIARB UK), Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), and he holds the title Fellow of the Institute of Administrative Managers (F.Inst.AM).
As a ranking legislator and current deputy speaker of the 10th House of Representatives, he plays a pivotal role in the leadership of the legislature. Hon. Kalu received the prestigious title 'UTABIRI BENDE' in acknowledgment of his leadership and philanthropy towards the people of Bende.
He is fluent in English and proficient in other native languages, adding versatility to his communication abilities.
He finds great happiness in his marriage to his wife, Ifeoma and their family is blessed with five children.
