MIDTERM: Basiru, Oriolowo raise a petition each in 2 years

OrderPaperToday – Senators representing the three senatorial districts in Osun State have sponsored two motions and two petitions in two years.

Analyses of the motions and petitions at midterm revealed that Sen. Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru (APC, Osun Central) sponsored only one petition, but with no motion to his credit.

Basiru, the spokesperson of the Senate, sponsored a petition against Federal Ministry of Industry Trade and Investment over abandonment of Osogbo Steel Rolling Company, Osun State.

Also, Sen. Fadahunsi Francis Adenigba (PDP, Osun East), the only opposition Senator from the State, has two motions to his credit, but with zero petition record in the period under review.

Fadahunsi sponsored a motion on the need for the Police to investigate the killing of Professor Jerome Elusiyan of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife.

He urged the police authority “to do thorough investigation into the killing toward apprehending the assailants and bring them to justice; and that Federal Government should place high priority on the safety of all Nigerian citizens.”

Similarly, he sponsored a motion on the need for the Federal Government to address the astronomical rise in food prices and its adverse effect on Nigerians.

In part of his submission, he urged the President, “to direct the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to open the silos reserves across the country to sell foodstuffs to the common man in the country to cushion the effect of the increase in price; and that all the Service Chiefs to ensure that farmers are protected to access their farmland across the country.”

Similarly, he urged the Senate to constitute an ad-hoc committee to investigate various interventions in the agricultural sector with the view to “ascertain whether the targeted beneficiaries benefited and recommend to Senate for further legislative action”

He urged the Federal Government “to as a matter of urgency embark on controlled importation of foodstuffs into the country to serve as urgent intervention to avoid looming food crises in the country and attendant consequences.”

Lastly, Sen. Oriolowo Adelere Adeyemi (APC, Osun West) had sponsored only one petition with zero motion during the period under review.

He sponsored a petition against Federal Civil Service Commission for alleged wrongful termination of her appointment of one Mrs. Sinmiat Oyewumi Oguntola.

The three Senators from the Osun State contributed 1.4% and 0.5% of the total motions and petitions sponsored in the Senate during the period under review.

Meanwhile, Basiru had led the State Senate team in bills sponsorship during same period.
