MIDTERM: Barau flies Kano flag on motions in senate

OrderPaperToday – Sen. Ibrahim Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North) at the midterm of the 9th Senate, has sponsored a total of 5 motions and 1 petition which gave him a performance edge over his counterparts in the red chamber.

Two of Barau’s motions were on improving Nigeria’s local and international trade; one of was on Nigeria’s membership of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCTA) wherein he commended President Muhammadu Buhari “for his strong political and economic will in accepting to sign the agreement in spite of earlier misgiving which have been put to rest by the presidential technical committee on the matter.”

He urged the Federal Government to enlighten the Nigerian business community to leverage on the immense benefits of the agreement and that “the Federal Government should continue its current policy of improving our infrastructures such as electricity, roads, and other basic necessities in order to bring about reduction and thus make product produced in Nigeria globally competitive.”

Similarly, Barau sponsored a motion on the menace of Child Trafficking in Nigeria. In his recommendations, he urged the Senate “to mandate the Committee on Women Affairs; Judiciary, Human Right and Legal Matters; and National Security and Intelligence to conduct an investigative hearing on child trafficking in the country with a view to proffer solutions.”

He further urged the agencies that are responsible to curb and eliminate child trafficking and trafficking in persons to be more effective in the discharge of their duties and that the Federal Government to prosecute child traffickers to serve as deterrent to others.
