OrderPaperToday – The three senators from Zamfara state shared only one motion and presented no petitions in the first two years of the 9th senate.
The lone motion was sponsored by Sen. Ya’u Sahabi (APC, Zamfara North), a ranking member of who has been a serving member of the National Assembly since 2007.
Sahabi in his motion addressed the need to check illegal mining activities in the country.
Sahabi admonished the federal government “to develop a national legal framework in response to illegal artisanal mining; clean the affected areas of the lead poisoning in Zamfara and Niger States and rehabilitate the victims of the after effect of lead poisoning and environmental degradation in Zamfara State.”
He further urged the Federal Government “to address consequential effect of illegal mining of environmental degradation and health hazards in Plateau State and other affected States of the federation and to reclaim mining ponds; and federal government to initiate presidential committee on solid mineral as was done on rice, cotton etc, in order to promote wealth creation, job opportunities and enhance diversification policy of the federal government of Nigeria.”
Similarly, he further urged the Senate “to mandate the committee on solid minerals, steel development and metallurgy to engage the minister of mines and steel development; and other stakeholders on providing a proper legal framework to guide optimum prospecting and exploitation of the nation’s solid mineral resources in safe, economic and environmental friendly ways.”
