Jigawa: No incumbent Senator will be in the 10th National Assembly

Jigawa State has three Senatorial Districts and eleven Federal Constituencies. Following the conclusion of the February 25, 2023 National Assembly elections, OrderPaper Nigeria highlights the winners of the legislative polls as declared by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Christened ‘The New World,’ Jigawa State, with the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999, ushered in a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led government and the party went on to dominate politics in the North Western state for sixteen years.

In 2015 however, the state was among the numerous states in the North West geo-political zone that fell to the hurricane wave of the newly-formed All Progressives Congress (APC) whose Presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, had just defeated an incumbent president for the first time in the country’s history. Having taken over as the governing party in the state for eight years, including holding the majority of both state and federal lawmakers, the APC was faced with a litmus test on its actual strength in post-Buhari.

This dynamic thus meant that the February 25 National Assembly Elections was going to be a keen contest by all standards. With the results of the legislative polls for all its Senatorial Districts and Federal Constituencies completely declared, the APC retained Jigawa as one of its prized strongholds.

According to the results declared by INEC, the party won two of the Senatorial seats, leaving one for the PDP, whose candidate for the Jigawa South-West Senatorial seat defeated incumbent lawmaker, Sabo Muhammad Nakudu of the APC to secure the party a seat in the Red Chamber in June. However, the PDP couldn’t match up with the APC in the House of Representatives election, as it managed to pick up just two of the eight seats alloted to the state in the Green Chamber.

The New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP) went on to win its first seat ever in a National Assembly election conducted in the state. Interestingly, no incumbent was elected in the Senate, while some were re-elected in the House of Representatives.
