LGAs: Osun Assembly urges Governor Adeleke to allow Status Quo
The Osun State House of Assembly has urged Governor Ademola Adeleke to maintain the status quo in the case of Local Government Chairmen and Councilors sacked by a Federal High Court, pending the exhaustion of all legal means.
Speaker of the Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, who stated this during Wednesday’s plenary, explained that the position of the parliament was purely from the point of law and not in any way to antagonise the executive arm of government.
Hours after his inauguration, Governor Adeleke had on Monday directed the most senior officers across all the local government council areas, the area office, LCDAs and ACDAs in the state to take charge of the affairs of their respective councils with immediate effect.
Senate okays amendment to Administration of Criminal Justice Act
The Senate, at its plenary on Wednesday, approved an amendment to the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) Bill following the consideration of a report by its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
The ACJA dates back to 2015, during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Chief Whip of the Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, had, in 2020, proposed an amendment to the ACJA after his release from prison following his conviction over money laundering.
2023: “It’s time to pass the Gender Bill” – Senator Olujimi
The lawmaker representing Ekiti South Senatorial District, Biodun Olujimi, has harped on the need to pass the Gender and Equitable Opportunities Bill 2022, especially as the 2023 general election is fast approaching.
She made the call at a one-day Policy Dialogue on “Gender and Equitable Opportunities Bills: Challenges, Prospects and Way Forward” held in Abuja on Thursday.
The former Senate Minority Leader explained that addressing the issues in the bill and the subsequent passage before the election would ensure the active participation of women.
Reps panel queries AGIP Oil over alleged tax evasion
The House of Representatives Ad hoc Committee on Joint Venture (JV) has frowned at the Nigerian Agip Oil Company Limited over alleged tax evasion.
Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Rep. Abubakar Fulata investigating the Structure and Accountability of JV Business and Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) of the NNPC, said it was not out to witch-hunt anybody.
Fulata stated that it would be unfair for oil companies to evade taxes at a time the country was borrowing to fund the budget.
2023: “NO PVC, No Voting,” – INEC insists
Barely eighty-five days to the February 25 Presidential/National Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reiterated that there would be no voting by any citizen without his or her Permanent Voters Card (PVC).
Chairman of the election management body, Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at a retreat on Thursday in Abuja,
While reading the ‘No PVC, No Voting’ Riot Act, Yakubu stated that INEC facilities had been set ablaze in no fewer than five local governments across the country in recent months.
