Delta is a state in the south-south part of Nigeria nicknamed ‘The Big Heart’. It has Asaba as the capital and was formed from the former Bendel State on August 27, 1991. It is blessed with crude oil and natural gas production as it is one of the main oil-producing states in the country.

The name “Bendel” (Ben-Del) was coined from the old Benin and Delta Provinces of Western Region-Delta to reflect the integration of Benin and Delta provinces. Delta State comprises twenty-five (25) Local Government Areas. It has three senatorial districts and ten federal constituencies.

It is currently governed by Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori who was declared the governor-elect on 20 March 2023. He is the immediate past Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly representing the Okpe Constituency of Delta State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas

Sen. Joel-Onowakpo is currently serving his first term as a Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District under the platform of the APC. Before contesting for the Senatorial Seat, He was the first executive chairman and the fifth chief executive of Delta State Board of Internal Revenue from 24 July 2009 to 22 September 2015. Senator Nwoko Chinedu Munir

Sen. Nwoko is currently serving his first term as a Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District under the platform of the PDP. In 1998 before going into Politics, the lawmaker was a legal officer at the crown prosecution service and qualified as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. Sen. Nwoko’s political career commenced in 1998 when he was elected into the National Assembly’s House of Representatives, representing the Aniocha/Oshimili federal constituency (1999-2003). Mutu is the longest-serving member in the House of Representatives (1999-2027) and is presently the chairman of the House Committee on Gas Resources in the 10th Assembly.
