Tinubu, others to attend Reps national dialogue on security and State Police

The House of Representatives is set for a One-Day National Dialogue on Security and State Police to facilitate a comprehensive national discussion on its merits and challenges.

In line with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly House of Representatives to address the security challenges in the country, the House of Representatives in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), FCDO/UKAID, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will convene a One-Day National Dialogue on Security and State Police on Monday, April 22, 2024.

The dialogue is scheduled to be held at the Abuja Continental Hotel (Former Sheraton Hotel & Towers by  9:00 am on Monday.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, by Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr. House Spokesman / Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs.

Rep. Rotimi stated the primary objective of the dialogue: “This Dialogue is to facilitate a comprehensive national discussion on the merits and challenges of State Police, with a focus on aggregating citizens’ views and perspectives. The event also aims to propose a model(s) as well as institutional and legal frameworks for the effective implementation of state policing in Nigeria.”

Adding that it “Aligned with the Legislative Agenda of the 10th Assembly House of Representatives, which seeks to develop legislative measures to address the prevailing security challenges in Nigeria, this Dialogue complements the president’s ongoing efforts to reform and strengthen the country’s security architecture for optimal performance.”

The host of this dialogue, Rep. Abbas Tajudeen, Speaker of the House of Representatives, emphasized the urgency of the National Dialogue, stating, “Insecurity in Nigeria demands urgent action and collective responsibility. The National Dialogue on Security and State Police provides a crucial platform for us to come together, engage in constructive dialogue, and propose actionable solutions.

“Let us seize this opportunity to strengthen our security architecture and ensure the safety and well-being of all Nigerians,” he said.

Distinguished Guests to grace the event include; Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, GCFR, President, Commander-in-Chief Federal Republic of Nigeria as the Special Guest of the House; Senator Godwill Akpabio, CON, President of the Senate as the Guest of Honour; Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, Former President, Federal Republic of Nigeria; and, Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR, Former Head of State, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Other guests are all State Governors, the Diplomatic Community and all citizens of Nigeria.
