The Nigeria Liquified Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited has announced that the Train 7 gas project on Bonny Island, Rivers State, has reached 67 percent completion. The company accordingly reassured of its commitment to delivering economic benefits through the completion of the project.
The company’s General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development, Andy Odeh, in a statement recently, disclosed that the project has already resulted in over 9,000 Nigerians working on the project on Bonny Island, with numerous indirect jobs and businesses emerging as a result of the construction.
OrderPaper recalls that a joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives chaired by Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe (PDP, Cross River North) last Thursday, expressed disappointment in the submissions made to it by the NLNG, stating that the figures contained are disputed. The committee went into its first closed-door meeting as lawmakers denounced NLNG and the contractors’ persistence in withholding vital information from the investigation.
The proceedings were put on hold until NLNG and SAIPEM Contracting Nigeria Ltd. submitted the necessary documentation.
Meanwhile Odeh in the statement, mentioned that officials of the NLNG who spoke at the reconvened session provided necessary information and clarifications to address issues raised by the Senate and House of Representatives’ Joint Committee on Gas.
He said, “NLNG confirmed that the project, with a total contract sum of $4.3bn, has reached an overall progress of 67 per cent completion, achieving a significant construction milestone of over 45 million man-hours without any Lost Time Injury. The company noted that the project was already delivering on one of its benefits with over 9,000 Nigerians working in the project on Bonny Island, and numerous indirect jobs and businesses emerging and booming as a result of the construction,” he said.
He stressed that the Train 7 project is a strategic initiative aimed at supporting the diversification of the country’s revenue sources and revenue generation during the energy transition. This, according to him, will help the country achieve a net-zero future. He also mentioned that it could serve as an inspiration for other gas development initiatives that seek to improve gas monetization and utilisation in the country.
“The company equally stressed the significance of the project to the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas initiative. It emphasised that the project is aligned with Nigeria’s gas development aspirations, as the outlined initiative is both timely and essential to secure the nation’s future, particularly as the global movement towards a net-zero future accelerates.
“NLNG expressed its respect for the National Assembly and committed to collaborate with the legislature to transform Nigeria’s energy landscape. It called on all stakeholders, including the Federal Government and all well-meaning Nigerians to support the preservation of an enabling environment for its successful completion and the attraction of more transformational projects to Nigeria,” Odeh asserted.

The NLNG Train 7 project involves the construction and operation of an additional Complete Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Train (CT) and a Common Liquefaction Unit (CLU) with a total capacity of 7.4 mtpa (million tons per annum).
Upon completion, the Project is expected to contribute to the Federal Government’s revenue portfolio diversification by generating over 12,000 new jobs throughout the building phase. Its tax base will grow as a result.
The engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contracts for the project were given to the SCD JV Consortium, which is made up of affiliates of Saipem, Chiyoda, and Daewoo, on May 13, 2020, by the NLNG shareholders following their adoption of the project’s Final Investment Decision (FID) on December 27, 2019.
The Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) Train 7 project was officially launched on June 15, 2021, by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, during a groundbreaking ceremony held at the company’s facility site on Bonny Island, Rivers State.
