Chairman of the National Assembly celebrates Nigerian journalists for their contributions to democracy and governance, highlights contributions of the Ninth National Assembly in the promotion of the right to freedom of speech and opinion

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has praised Nigerian journalists on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day for their significant impact on Nigeria’s socio-political and economic progress.
This was contained in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja by Special Adviser on Media; Ola Awoniyi, where he wished journalists a happy day.
“Nigerian journalists deserve our appreciation for their contributions to democracy and governance in general in Nigeria as the fourth estate of the realm. Promoting press freedom is not only upholding the rights of an important segment of the society, it is also promoting the human right to freedom of speech and opinion.
It is in the light of this that the Ninth National Assembly has ensured in the past four years, that no legislation under its purview tampers with these rights,” Lawan says.

The 3rd of May annually is celebrated as World Press Freedom Day by the United Nations General Assembly in honorr of journalists’ tremendous efforts and achievements in revealing society’s most fundamental and untold truths.
This year’s celebration themed ‘Shaping a future of rights: freedom of expression as the engine of other human rights’ is the 30th Anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s resolution to declare International Press Freedom Day, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
