The House of Representatives has established a 7-member ad hoc committee to probe the root cause of the continuous violence in parts of Jos, Plateau state.

The House also directed the Chief of Defense Staff to establish a Civilian Joint Task Force in the state to repel terrorist attacks and reduce violence.

These resolutions follow the adoption of an urgent motion on “Terrorist Attacks in Mangu local government area, Plateau state,” which was sponsored by Rep. Ishaya David Lalu (APC, Plateau), and co-sponsored by Rep. Dalyop Fom Chollom (LP, Plateau).

Presenting the motion, Rep. Lalu recounted a recent attack in the state that caused the death of 50 persons and displaced more than 20,000 people.

The attack occurred on Monday and Tuesday last week, as gunmen stormed villages in Plateau’s Mangu district firing on residents and setting fire to houses.

Speaking on this, Rep. Lalu expressed concern about the continuous attacks and called for quick intervention to enhance the security situation in the area.

On the 24th of January, 2024, there was another attack on the people of Mangu local government area of Plateau state killing more than 50 persons, others seriously injured, with over 1000 Houses worth billions of naira completely destroyed. About 20,000 people were displaced at different Internally displaced persons camps within and outside the LGA,” he said.

This is the first plenary in the House, after a 30-day recess. The House resumption in 2024 had been earlier scheduled for January 23, 2024, but was extended by one week.

OrderPaper had rightly predicted that the state of insecurity, among other issues, would be an issue to be raised at the resumption of the National Assembly. You can find our Legislative Intelligence Forecast Entry (LIFE) here.
