Two members of the House of Representatives from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja record nil bills as the only senator representing the territory sponsors one in one year.
Abuja is representated in the 10th National Assembly by one senator and two members in the House of Representatives, making a total of three. Interesingly, they are all newbies (first termers).
Out of a total number of 1,650 bills sponsored in the 10th National Assembly in one year, 3 lawmakers representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, account for 1 bill only. The bill which is sponsored by Ireti Kingibe, the lone senator representing Abuja is focused on education and has progressed to second reading. It is titled, “Bill for the Establishment of Federal Capital Territory Nursing and Midwifery school”.
According to a detailed analysis of bills processed between June 2023 and May 2024, the senate introduced a total of 475 bills out of Abuja accounts for one; and in the House of Representatives bills sponsored were 1175 with none of the two representatives from the territory accounting for zero.
Sen. Kingibe has been engaged in a war of words with the minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike. The war between the duo seems not to have an end in sight and this might likely affect performance and quality representation due to the distraction from legislative duties.
Rep. Obika Chinedu representing Abuja Municipal/Bwari sponsored zero bill, as well as Rep. Ajiya Abdulrahaman representing Abaji/Gwagwalada/Kuje/Kwali also recorded nil bill within the period under review.
