“Distinguished Senator Natasha, in the chamber, you have to be recognised before you speak, we are not in a night club.”

“Distinguished Senator Natasha, in the chamber, you have to be recognised before you speak, we are not in a nightclub.”

The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Thursday made a derogatory statement to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP, Kogi Central) on the floor of the Senate over a matter of speaking without being recognised.

This incident occurred during plenary while proceedings were ongoing. Akpabio had put the second reading of a bill to a voice vote of which the ‘nays’ had it.

While Akpabio was still contemplating on the next decision to take on the bill, Senator Natasha rose to explain why the senators were voting against the second reading of the bill.

She said: “Mr President, we don’t want it to be killed, we just want a bit of modification.”

In his response, Akpabio said, “Distinguished Senator Natasha, in the chamber, you have to be recognised before you speak, we are not in a night club.”

Taking her seat, Natasha apologised saying, “pardon me.”

STAR Check: Nigerians, particularly, constituents of Kogi Central district, can keep tabs on the legislative performance of Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan throughout the 10th senate here.

For how long do we continue to disgrace our women folk in this country, see another episode in our national assembly, A senate president telling a woman senator like him that we are not in night club, when we don’t respect a woman senator, how do we now treat ordnary woman on the road? Just last time somebody say a woman senator wanted to befriend him, just to denigrate her, Let’s change our life style towards women, they are mothers.

The senate president, apkabio, was uncultured and immature in his outburst.
