Hon. Egwu is currently the Senator representing Ebonyi North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, and former Governor of Ebonyi State from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. He was said to be born on June 20, 1954 at Iboko in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. completed his elementary education at St John's Primary School Iboko, graduating in 1956. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Agric Science from the University of Nigeria Nsukka in 1981 and completed his Masters in the same Discipline and same school in 1986. He obtained his Ph.D in Agronomy from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology(ESUT) in 1996.
