Sen. Abubakar is a serving senator representing Zamfara West Senatorial District under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the 10th Assembly.
Senator Abubakar began his political career in 1999 when he served as the Secretary of the then All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP) between 1999 and 2003. On April 26, 2011, Senator Yari was elected Governor of Zamfara State on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party(ANPP)(2011-2019), he was re-elected under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC).
He was first elected as a senator in 2019, but was nullified by the supreme court on the grounds of a complaint of lack of a proper party nomination through party primaries
