He was born on July 19, 1962 in Anambra State. He is a second-time Senator, elected into the Red Chamber in the 8th Assembly (2015-2019), representing Anambra Central under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He will return to the 10th Assembly under Labour Party (LP).
Senator Umeh served in various positions at the state parties level in the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He is a founding member of the PDP in Anambra State and also its state treasurer in 1999. He also served as pioneer national vice-chairman of APGA, South East, elected as the treasurer in 2003 and acting national chairman in 2004.
Dr. Umeh also served as the chairman of the APGA Peace/Reconciliation and National Outreach Committee and was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by President Goodluck Jonathan administration.
