Born September 25, 1984, the lawmaker is currently serving his first term as a Senator representing Cross River South Senatorial District under the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC).
Before joining mainstream politics in 2015, Sen Ekpenyong worked as a financial analyst at Davandy Finance and Securities Limited, Lagos, before relocating to Cross River where he worked as a lecturer in the Banking and Finance Department of the University of Calabar for 2 years. The lawmaker was later appointed Executive Director for Finance at Pearland Energy, an indigenous Oil and Gas company, and a member of the board of directors at Ekondo Microfinance Bank Limited.
In December 2015 Senator Ekpenyong was appointed Cross River State Commissioner for Finance by Governor Benedict Ayade at the age of 29, making him one of the youngest commissioners in Nigeria.
History has it that Senator Ekpenyong is the longest-serving commissioner for Finance in Cross River State.
In 2018 he was appointed commissioner for transport and marine services following the resignation of Mr. Savior Nyong to contest the 2019 elections.
Before contesting for the senatorial seat, Senator Ekpenyong resigned as Commissioner for Finance and Joined the race for the governorship of Cross River State for the 2023 Cross River State gubernatorial election but in May 2022 withdrawal interest and join the senatorial race.
