The Senate also asked the Customs Service to reduce the number of checkpoints at border communities to aid the free flow of goods.
The Senate has directed the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to discipline its personnel who mishandle firearms at the borders of the country.
It also urged the Service to decrease the number of checkpoints at borders, to facilitate the free movement of commodities,
These are part of the recommendations of the ad-hoc committee, which probed the alleged misuse of firearms by NCS personnel were adopted by the Senate on Tuesday.
Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Francis Fadahunsi (APC, Osun East) also recommended that the comptrollers at Idi-roko and Katsina borders be replaced with new ones, and urged the federal government to give the residents of the border areas who are impacted, access to essential facilities.

“The Federal government should direct the Comptroller-General of customs and other heads of security agencies to reduce the multiple checkpoints mounted in border communities. It will aid the free flow of goods in and around the communities to the main town.
“The Comptroller-General of Customs should investigate and review border activities. Officers found guilty of abuse of firearms should be punished.
“The Federal government should take into consideration the social bond that exists between the border communities and other foreign countries, such as people of the border community and the people of Benin Republic.
“Federal government should provide basic amenities for people in the affected border communities.
“The senate should commend the Seme area command of Nigeria customs and Saki area command of Nigeria customs for ensuring the cordial relationship between the communities and the commands.
“The CG should investigate the shooting of the convoy of the Katsina chief of staff,” he added.
