The House Spokesperson broke down in tears on the floor of the house over the incessant killings in Ekiti state
The Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Akintunde Rotimi (APC, Ekiti) broke down in tears over the spate of criminal attacks which has led to the death of some members of his constituency in Ekiti state.
Rep Rotimi could not hold back his emotion on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, while moving a motion of urgent importance on the “need for security agencies to urgently stem the tide of criminality ravaging Ekiti state.”
Presenting his motion, the lawmaker, observed there has been an increase in criminal activities in Ekiti North 1, (Ikole / Oye Federal Constituency) in recent times resulting in the loss of lives and properties.
Rep Rotimi, who was crying intermittently as he spoke, narrated that on Monday, January 29, 2024, a gang of outlaws launched an attack in the Oke-Ako area in Ikole Local Government Area
The situation, according to the lawmaker, has caused the death of two monarchs – the Onimojo of Imojo Ekiti, Oba Olatunji Samuel Olusola; and the Elesun of Esun Ekiti, Oba David Babatunde Ogunsola and left life-threatening injuries on many others.
The lawmaker also observed that this was not an isolated event, as in the past few days alone, a commercial driver was killed, and a group of students who were on their way to school abducted
“In the past few days alone, a commercial driver was killed between Ayedun and Ayebode by armed bandits, and just yesterday, a school bus load of students were abducted in Emure Ekiti and their whereabouts is still unknown.
“The late Onimojo was an intellectual and highly intelligent historian and orator who always spoke truth to power.
“The late Elesun was a peace-loving king who was very hands-on in the development of Esun-Ayedun communities.
He also said, insecurity in the state is “because of the topography of the area, and the bad roads, there has been an incursion of murderous elements who parade themselves as herdsmen leading to heightened insecurity”
To this end, the House asked the Chief of Army Staff and other security authorities to redeploy the personnel to rescue school children and teachers in Emure Ekiti and enhance security in the area.
The House asked the Ministry of Works to rehabilitate the Ayedun to Irele road, and other roads in the constituency.
The House Committee Legislative Compliance is to ensure compliance and report back within two weeks for further legislative action.
This is the first plenary in the House, after a 30-day recess. The House resumption in 2024 had been earlier scheduled for January 23, 2024, but was extended by one week.
OrderPaper had rightly predicted that the state of insecurity, among other issues, would be an issue to be raised at the resumption of the National Assembly. You can find our Legislative Intelligence Forecast Entry (LIFE) here.
