The motion sponsor worried that the farmers might be unable to repay their loans due to the destruction of their farmlands by the flood.
The House of Representatives has called for the provision of palliatives for victims of flash floods in Wudil Local Government in Kano state.
It also directed the Ecological Fund Office (EFO) to provide a lasting solution to the problem of flooding in Wudil.
The call was contained in a motion on the “Flooding in Wudil Local Government Area of Kano State” sponsored by Rep. Abdulhakeem Kamilu Ado (NNPP, Kano).
Ado, in his debate, said the area is bedeviled by recurrent flooding which has led to loss of lives and damage to farmlands and agricultural produce worth millions of Naira as well as the displacement of several people, destruction of livelihood, and a harsh economic condition.

According to him, most of the farmers affected by the flood crisis were funded by the Federal Government’s Anchor Borrowers’ programme, a scheme to provide loans to smallholder farmers across the country.
He feared that the affected farmers may be unable to pay back their loans owing to the destruction of their farmlands by the flood.
He also informed that the flooding has destroyed most of the buildings in “Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, forcing academic activities to stop, thus the students are unable to continue in their various academic pursuits.”
The lawmaker implored that the flooding in Wudil be checked to prevent the disruption of the food supply chain.
In adopting the motion, the House also directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials, and temporary accommodation for victims of affected communities.
It further directed its Committees on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees (IDPs) to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
