Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged security agencies to deploy personnel to the affected communities.
The House of Representatives has called on the Nigerian Army, Department of State Services, and other security agencies to increase their personnel deployment to address the frequent attacks on the Unguwar Goje community in Katsina State.
This followed an adoption of a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House of Representatives on Thursday, Rep. Shehu Dalhatu (Katsina, APC) called for immediate action to address the incessant banditry attacks in his constituency, Faskari/Kankara/Sabuwa.
OrderPapar recalls that on May 7, 2024, an unspecified number of people, mostly women and children, were kidnapped in Unguwar Goje of Sayau Ward, Sabuwa Local Government. The abductors allegedly demanded over N1 million for their release.
On May 12, gunmen invaded the Unguwar Hussain community, resulting in the deaths of five people and the kidnapping of numerous others.
Two days later, according to Dalhatu, bandits attacked Yarmalamai Ward in Faskari Local Government, killing nine people. The attack displaced over 5,000 residents, led to the theft of 4,900 bags of grain and more than 200 cattle, and resulted in the destruction of approximately 50 shops by fire.
He added that a recent attack by the bandits resulted in the deaths of five soldiers.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged security agencies to deploy personnel to the Yarmalamai community. Additionally, the House called on the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and the National Emergency Management Agency to provide food and non-food items to prevent thousands of victims from suffering from hunger and severe hardship.
In a related development, the House deliberated on a motion titled “Need to Investigate the Escalating Insecurity in Communities within Makarfi-Audan Federal Constituency of Kaduna State, Following the Death of Malam Kabiru, the Village Head of Marke Community on May 2, 2024.
Rep. Shehu Ajilo (APC, Kaduna) raised a motion addressing the escalating insecurity in his constituency. Ajilo expressed that the worsening situation has significantly deprived the people of Makarfi/Kudan of their constitutionally guaranteed inalienable rights.
He stated, “The House is concerned about the recent incident in which the village head of Marke, Malam Kabiru Muhammadu, was brutally killed and set ablaze. This tragedy resulted in injuries to some of his household members and the loss of properties worth millions of Naira on Thursday, May 24, 2024.”
Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary session in his ruling, directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), in conjunction with the military and other security agencies such as the DSS, to investigate the recent incident. He also instructed these agencies, through their respective House Committees, to develop strategic security operations to address the escalating menace in the affected communities. This directive followed the adoption of a motion.
In response to the ongoing insecurity, the House observed a minute of silence in honour of the 27 individuals killed in Bilbis town, Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, on May 10, 2024.
The incident was brought to the House’s attention by Amadu Kabiru, the representative of the Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency, during Thursday’s plenary session.
The House extended its condolences to the bereaved families who tragically lost their loved ones and called on NEMA to provide relief materials to the affected families.
