2023: US earmarks $50m to train INEC officials, journalists
Ahead of the 2023 general election, the United States of America has allocated $50 million as technical support in the areas of training journalists, INEC officials and civil society organisations to conduct credible elections in Nigeria.
The Consul-General of the United States Consulate in Lagos, Will Stevens, made this known on Monday in Ibadan, at the opening of a three-day intensive Election Reporting Workshop on election reporting for political reporters, editors, video journalists and videographers in the South West.
The workshop was organised by West Africa Broadcast and Media Academy, Enugu Literary Society and supported by the United States Consulate-General, Lagos.
Ondo Assembly to resume sitting after seven weeks of recess
The Ondo State House of Assembly is to resume sitting on Wednesday, 16th November 2022, after close to two months of recess.
The announcement was contained in a statement by the Clerk of the House, Benjamin Jayeola, who stated that the resumption is at the instance of the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. David Oleyelogun.
According to the statement, the sitting will hold at the State Assembly Complex while the lawmakers are expected to attend to state assignments during the plenary.
2023: INEC wants media support on voter sensitisation
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought the support of the media as a critical partner towards ensure voter sensitisation and sustenance of democracy in the country.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner IN Lagos, Olusegun Agbaje, disclosed this during a media workshop organised by the Taipei Nigerian office in Ikeja GRA, Lagos.
“The fourth estate of the realm is the media and its roles (duties, functions, and responsibilities) towards the sustenance of our nascent democratic experience in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasised,” Agbaje, who was represented by INEC’S Director of Voter Education in Lagos, Adenike Tadeshe, stated
Anambra Youth move to curb godfatherism at State Assembly
Ahead of the 2023 general election, the youth of Anambra West Local Government Area have organised debates for State House of Assembly candidates to enable them to sell their vision and plans for the constituency.
As reported by the Voice of Nigeria (VON), organisers of the open debate held in Umuezi-Anam, described the debate as an essential landmark in the constituency’s democratic journey; adding that it would deepen democracy, growing maturity of governance and politics in Anambra West Local Government Area.
“We the Youths, have been interested and strongly involved in the leadership and governance of the democratic system in Anambra State and Nigeria. We believe that when credible leaders are elected into public office, it will consequently drive development and reduce godfatherism, corruption and poverty to a great degree,” Simeon Okoye, Youth President of the Council Area, stated in his opening remarks.
Court sacks Senator Akpabio as APC Senatorial Candidate
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, Monday set aside the judgment of Federal High Court Abuja, has sacked Senator Godswill Akpabio; the immediate past Minister for Niger Delta Affairs as the All Progressives Congress (APC) Candidate for Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.
In a judgement delivered by a three-member panel of justices led by Justice Danlami Senchi held that Akpabio failed to file a proof of arguments within the time provided by the rules.
The panel further ruled that Akpabio, being a presidential aspirant of the APC, he could not participate in the May 27 primary of the party held on and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which produced Udom Ekpoudom as a candidate.
