Kano State House of Assembly passed the Kano State Emirate Council Law (Repeal) 2024, which dissolved five Emirates.
In a significant legislative move, the Kano State House of Assembly has passed the Kano State Emirate Council Law (Repeal) 2024, effectively dissolving the five existing emirates in the state and reverting to a single emirate structure.
The decision was made during Thursday’s plenary session, presided over by Speaker Hon. Ismail Falgore.
The amendment bill, which successfully passed its second and third readings, was brought forward to restore the traditional and historical integrity of the Kano Emirate.
Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu, a key proponent of the amendment, argued that the previous division into five emirates had diminished Kano’s capacity and dignity on the national stage. “Repealing this law will revive the lost glory of Kano,” Butu stated, emphasizing the need to unify the emirate to enhance its standing and influence.
On his part, Majority Leader Lawan Dala also supported the amendment, highlighting the cultural implications of the previous structure. “The emirate council serves as a custodian of our culture, which has been distorted by the creation of additional emirates,” Dala remarked.
He stressed the importance of returning to Kano’s historical roots of having one emirate, symbolizing unity and cultural continuity.
With this development, the deposed Emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi Lamido, may be on his way back to the seat, as Emir of Kano, to oversee all the 44 local government areas of the state.
