House in rowdy session over controversial tax bill

The House spokesperson and his deputy came under fire from members over the controversial tax reform bills

Rep. Rotimi Akintunde Oluwaseun, lawmaker from Ekiti State

There was uproar in the House of Representatives on Tuesday as members demanded that the spokesperson of the House, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. (APC Ekiti) to sit-down for announcing an endorsement of the controversial tax bills.

Akin drew the ire of his colleagues while moving for the consideration of report on Nigerian content development and monitoring on behalf of Rep. Boma Goodhead (PDP Rivers).

The members shouted “sit-down” even after the speaker, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, who presided over the session withdrew the statement on behalf of Rep. Akin.

Following lack of seconder for the report Rep. Akin stepped down the report consideration.

The house remained unsettled even after dissolving into the committee of the whole.

Similarly upon resuming from the committee of the whole,  Rep. Mustapha Ghali (NNPP Kano), come under order 6 rule 5 to complain against a publication.

Rep. Ghali called on the deputy spokesman of the House, Rep. Philip Agbese (APC Benue) to tender an apology or resign from his position.

He said : “I woke up this morning to see an online publication from the deputy spokesperson, the newspaper is daily trust which said “Those who opposed to the tax reform bills now seeking speedy passage”.

“Mr. Speaker I am one of the first persons that opposed this tax bills, and the deputy spokesperson did not contact me as a stakeholders and seek my opinion in this.

Ghali said what this means is ” like he is insinuating that those who opposed this tax bill is there is an inducement somewhere.

“Therefore Mr. Speaker I am calling for the withdrawal of this statement, an investigation and an apology in a print media. Because this is injurious to me, to my people, my religion, also to my political party.”
