Following the consideration of its Committee on Police Affairs report, the Senate has confirmed the appointment of a former Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase (Rtd) as the new Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The report of the nominee’s screening was presented by the Senator Haliru Jika-led Committee on Police Affairs during plenary on Wednesday.

According to the lawmaker, the nominee, Arase, possesses the academic qualifications, technical knowledge and professional experience to be appointed Chairman of the PSC. He further disclosed that Arase possesses the Code of Conduct Acknowledgement slip and that he was cleared by the Nigeria Police Force, as well as the Department of State Services (DSS).

Senator Halliru added that the panel did not receive any petition against his nomination and the ex-IGP performed creditably well during the screening exercise; proving that he has capacity to lead the Police Service Commission (PSC) as its Chairman.

OrderPaper Nigeria had reported that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday requested the Senate’s confirmation of Arase’s appointment as the new PSC chairman. The President, in a letter read during plenary by the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, said the appointment was in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the 1999 Constitution.

With his confirmation, Arase replaces Musiliu Smith, also, an ex-Inspector-General of Police who resigned as PSC Chairman recently.

In a related development, the Senate, after considering several reports of its committee on TETFUND seeking the establishment of tertiary institutions, as well as the report of the Committee on Health seeking a legal framework to establish the Federal Medical Centre, Okigwe in Imo state, adjourned plenary till 28th of February, 2023 after the National Assembly election.
