On this year’s Children’s Day, we celebrate our nation’s greatest assets, we are reminded as individuals, institutions, and organisations of the need to promote their well-being and protect their rights.

In commemoration of this year’s Children’s Day celebration, the House of Representatives has extended its heartfelt felicitations to Nigeria’s children.

This was contained in a statement signed by the spokesman of the House Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., on  May 27.

The statement reads, “On this day celebrating our nation’s greatest assets, we are reminded as individuals, institutions, and organisations of the need to promote their well-being and protect their rights as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

As we celebrate this year, there is an increasing need for all stakeholders to collectively raise awareness on issues that affect access to quality education for our children, in appreciating that they are the future of society.

The 10th House of Representatives is encouraging measures through legislation, oversight and outreach to ensure the full achievement of Universal Basic Education, Almajiri education and Technical education in Nigeria, in alignment with our Legislative Agenda. We are also making efforts to revisit the proposal that the constitutional provision of education be made a fundamental right,”

Additionally, the House called on state-level counterparts to collaborate with government bodies to ensure the effective implementation of the Child Rights Act in their respective states, and to advocate for the domestication of the law in states where it has not yet been achieved.

Recognizing the critical need for improved infrastructure in learning institutions and enhanced teacher quality, the House indicated plans to enact legislation aimed at bolstering these areas.

The 10th House of Representatives is cognisant of the fact that reforming and modernising the technical education system is pivotal for equipping students with the skills required to thrive in the modern era and contribute effectively to Nigeria’s economic growth the statement further reads

The House therefore urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to continue nurturing creativity in children, encouraging them to express themselves through activities that highlight their talents and voices.

We honour every Nigerian child and we wish them a fruitful celebration.”
