Reps to probe mass retirement in the central bank
The House of Representatives has resolved to set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the circumstances that led to the mass retirement of 1,000 staff members of the Central Bank of Nigeria. The House also resolved to ascertain the N50bn payoff earmark for the settlement of the disengaged staff members of the apex bank. The resolution of the House followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Rep. Kama Nkemkama (APC Ebonyi). He noted that the development “raises critical questions about the criteria for selection, transparency, and adherence to due process in line with public service guidelines and labour laws.”

Reps advance consolidated AI bill
The House of Representatives advanced the consolidated bill on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. The bill titled: “A Bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of the National Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Studies Sciences Regulation Commission to ensure Proper Control of Usage of Artificial Intelligence (Ai) Technology in Nigeria, Regulate the Development, Deployment, and use of Artificial Intelligence in Nigeria and for Related Matters (HBs.143, 601, 942, and 1810)” was sponsored by Rep. Sada Soli (APC Katsina), Rep. Benjamin Kalu (APC Abia), Rep. Ademorin Kuye, Rep. Ibrahim Isiaka and Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. (APC Ekiti) scaled second reading on Tuesday. Leading the debate on the bill, Rep. Sada said “this bill is simply trying to develop a framework within the AI system. There is a need for human oversight, there is a need to put in some safeguard”. The bill thereafter was referred to committee ICT and science engineering for further legislative action.
