In the bye-election conducted today, Saturday, 3 February 2024, a total of 74 candidates contested for nine seats in the State and National assemblies.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has conducted and announced the results of nine bye-elections and 35 rerun elections across 26 states of the country.
According to INEC, Fuad Laguda, a former chairman of the APC in Surulere Local Government, has emerged as the winner of the bye-election for Surulere Federal Constituency.
The Returning Officer for the bye-election, Prof. Simeon Adebayo, announced Laguda’s win after he garnered a total of 11,203 votes, defeating his closest challenger by a significant margin.

In the Senate, 13 candidates jostled for the two (2) seats in Ebonyi South Senatorial District and Yobe East Senatorial District made vacant after David Umahi and Geidam Ibrahim who were appointed Minister of Works and Police Affairs respectively by President Bola Tinubu.

In the House of Representatives, 39 others contested for the four vacant seats in Surulere 1 Federal Constituency, Lagos State, Akoko North East/Akoko North West Federal Constituency in Ondo State, Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency, Taraba State and Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency, Kebbi State.
The Surulere 1 Federal Constituency of Lagos State seat became vacant when Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, who was the speaker of the 9th House, resigned to take up the appointment as Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, while the Akoko North West/North East Federal Constituency in Ondo State seat became vacant following the appointment of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as the Minister of Interior.
The Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski Federal Constituency of Kebbi State seat became vacant following the appointment of Tanko Sununu as Minister of State for Education.
Meanwhile, Ismaila Galadanci had initially won the election to represent Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency, Taraba State on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but died in April 2023, two months before the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.
Also, in the State Houses of Assemblies, 22 candidates contested for the Chibok Constituency, Borno State House of Assembly, Chikun 1 Constituency, Kaduna State House of Assembly; and Guma (Guma I) Constituency, Benue State House of Assembly.
