Borno Flood: Reps task FG to provide huge Grants

Just as predicted by OderPaper’s Legislative Forecast Entry (LIFE), the House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government (FG) to intervene urgently in the aftermath of the devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State.

At the resumed plenary on Wednesday, lawmakers emphasized the dire need for immediate assistance, particularly for the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, which was severely affected by the disaster.

The House, in its call for action, requested that the FG allocates a substantial grant to support not only the hospital but the broader Maiduguri community, which has been grappling with the flood’s aftermath. Additionally, it stressed the importance of renovating the historic Shehu of Borno’s palace, which also suffered significant damage.

Leading the debate on his urgent motion of importance, Rep. Amos Gwamna Magaji (PDP, Kaduna) expressed concern over the state of the teaching hospital, emphasizing that the facility, which is meant to serve as a crucial center for flood victims, has had its operations disrupted by the flood, with much of its essential equipment destroyed.

The hospital is in dire need of immediate intervention,” Rep. Magaji stated. “Without urgent action, the people of Maiduguri will continue to suffer from a lack of proper medical attention during this critical time that may lead to outbreak of diseases.”

Adding to the debate, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi (PDP Plateau) appreciated efforts so far, called on well-meaning Nigerians both home and abroad to come to the aid of people of Maiduguri as many lives and businesses have been lost.

OrderPaper recalls on 10 September, heavy rain caused the Alau dam in Borno state to overflow, leading to major floods in and around the city of Maiduguri. The deluge heavily impacted houses, markets, fields, livestock, and several health facilities.
