Days after the extra-judicial killing of pregnant Lagos lawyer, Bolanle Raheem in Lagos, Rep. Obanikoro sponsors motion at Green Chamber urging an investigation of the incident. Lawmakers insist officers must be barred from consuming substances that can inhibit their sense of reasoning
The House of Representatives has called for an immediate investigation of the alleged killing of Bolanle Raheem and Gafaru Buraimoh by officers of the Nigeria Police in Lagos and justice for families of the two victims.
This followed the adoption of a resolution by Rep.Ibrahim Babajide Obanikoro, representing Eti-Osa Federal Constituency of Lagos State.
The House also passed a resolution urging the Police authorities to ban its officers from consuming alcohol and other hard substances that can inhibit their sense of reasoning and capability to carry out their duties judiciously. They stressed that there should be a zero-tolerance policy in place to stop such misbehaviour in the Nigeria Police.
The House noted that on Sunday, December 25th, 2022, Mrs Raheem who was seven months pregnant with twins; together with her family, were returning from church when they were pulled over in the Ajah area of Lagos by officers of the Nigeria Police; and without any altercation, one of the officers ASP Drambi Vandi aimed at and pulled the trigger, killing her on the spot.
“Concerned that the same incident happened earlier in the month, on 7th of December 2022, where officers of the same Ajiwe Police Station gunned down a young man by the name Gafaru Buraimoh which sparked a bit of civic unrest.
Worried that this type of occurrence often happens across Nigeria and that the officers usually get away with shooting and killing of same innocent citizens they swore to protect.”
Ruling on the motion, speaker Femi Gbajabiamila who presided over plenary, described the situation as unfortunate and directed the appropriate Committee of the House to take stringent legislative measures on the matter.
