- Reps urge NEMA to provide relief materials to victims of boat mishap
Just as predicted in OrderPaper’s Legislative Intelligence Forecast Entry (LIFE) for the week, the House of Representatives today called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to intervene and provide relief materials to victims of boat mishap in the Gwajibo Mudi community, a riverine area in the Kaiama local government area of Kwara state.
It also urged the ministry of marine and blue economy and the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to provide ferries for easy transportation in the axis.
This followed a motion of national importance by Rep. Mohammed Umar Bio (APC Kwara), on the “ need to assist victims of boat mishap that claimed several lives, left many injured and missing persons at Gwajibo, Mudi and Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State”. Bio narrated the unfortunate incident which occurred on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, involving approximately 285 individuals on a journey to the neighboring community of Gwajibo in Niger State for a celebration. Following the boat mishap, more than half of those onboard died, with several still missing and only a few survivors. He emphasized the urgent need for intervention and the provision of relief materials, warning that failure to deliver this assistance could lead to further disaster.

Rep. Ahmadu Jaha (APC Borno), in his motion, said the disaster had a profound impact on the community, displaced many and caused significant damage to infrastructure. He noted that the Nigerian military and other law enforcement agencies displayed a remarkable effort in their swift response showcasing their readiness to humanitarian issues, their collaborative approach with other agencies, community outreach in providing food and other necessities and risk management. - Climate change: Reps urge MDAs, Private sectors, to prioritize green projects
The House of Representatives has urged federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and the private sector to prioritize sustainable practices in green projects to combat climate change related issues. This call followed the adoption of a motion moved by Rep. Amos Daniel (PDP Kaduna) at Tuesday’s plenary. He emphasised the need to address such environmental challenges as population growth, flood, desertification, soil erosion and biodiversity loss. He said MDAs have a role to play in championing afforestation, waste reduction and waste recycling programmes, among others. The lawmaker reminded MDAs that integrating green projects into government operations would help Nigeria meet global climate goals while delivering economic and environmental benefits.
Upon adoption of the motion, the House urged the National Climate Change Council (NCCC) to enforce the requirement for all MDAs to develop and implement sustainability plans. It directed the Committees on Climate Change, Renewable Energy, Environment, and Ecological Fund to collaborate with the executive arm to educate citizens, companies, and MDAs on the importance of adopting sustainable practices. The House also mandated the Committee on Appropriation to work with the Ministry of Budget and Planning to provide additional funding, starting from the 2025 budget, to MDAs that implement sustainable practices and demonstrate carbon credit potential.
