Gbenga Daniel had before winning the February 2023 Senate election to represent Ogun East District, governed ‘The Gateway State’ between 2003 and 2011 as a member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmaker representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Gbenga Daniel, has written to the Ogun State Government requesting an immediate suspension of monthly payments being paid to him as a former governor of the state.
As contained in a letter addressed to the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, dated June 14, Senator Daniel said his action was in compliance with his good conscience, moral principles and ethical code against double emoluments as a sitting Senator of the Federal Republic and former state governor.
Senator Daniel, who stated that the gross payment for his pension and allowances as former governor of the South West State has been N676,376.95 kobo monthly, noted that he, however, has never benefitted from any welfare packages in the form of medical allowances, furniture, transportation and others since leaving office.

“After my inauguration at the Senate, I wrote H.E Prince Dapo Abiodun MFR, CON on June 14, 2023, to notify him of my decision to have the monthly payment of N676,376.95kobo being gross payment for my pension and allowances as former governor of the Ogun State suspended immediately.
This decision I made, in good conscience, moral principles and guiding ethics. It is also important to state that this is the only payment and package I get from the state government as a former governor,” the former governor tweeted on his official Twitter handle late Thursday.

Before his election to the Senate in February 2023, the Ogun East Senator had governed ‘The Gateway State’ between 2003 and 2011 as a member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and participated actively in politics up till the national level. He last served as Director-General of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation in 2019 before he announced a retirement from partisan politics in March of the same year.
He, however, reversed that decision and pitched a tent in February 2021 with the All Progressives Congress (APC), on whose platform he secured a ticket to contest the 2023 National Assembly elections and win.
Senator Daniel is the second former governor of Ogun State to proceed to the federal parliament other than his successor; Senator Ibikunle Amosun, who represented Ogun Central Senatorial District in the Ninth National Assembly.
