The southern Caucus in the House has backed President Tinubu’s controversial tax bills despite stiff opposition from some of their colleagues.

The southern caucus of the House of Representatives has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s controversial tax reform bills while emphasising their commitment to ongoing dialogue with Nigerians.

Addressing the press on Tuesday, Rep. Nicholas Mutu (PDP, Delta), leader of the caucus, affirmed their readiness to engage with diverse perspectives on the bills. The proposed legislation includes the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill 2024, the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill 2024, and the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill 2024. These bills aim to enhance fiscal governance, modernize public revenue systems, and foster economic growth.

Rep. Fredrick Agbedi (PDP, Bayelsa), highlighted the caucus’s consultation with their constituents. “We are open to dialogue. This is just the initial stage to inform you that we’ve received the bills. The National Assembly’s role is to review and process proposals from the executive or individuals. Once received, these bills follow standard legislative procedures, including public hearings,” he stated.

Agbedi further noted that the caucus remains committed to its legislative duties. “As representatives of our constituents, we aim to craft better tax laws for Nigeria. This is not about regional divides but about fulfilling our responsibility to the nation.”

Rep. Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) echoed similar sentiments, emphasising the constitutional process involved. “The National Assembly, comprising the Senate and the House of Representatives, is empowered to make laws. The executive has presented these bills, and they will undergo first and second readings, followed by public hearings. While there may be differing opinions, our collective goal is to ensure a stronger Nigeria through improved tax systems,” he said.

The caucus assured Nigerians of their commitment to ensuring that the tax reform process is inclusive and beneficial to the nation.
