The finance committee is asked to stay action to allow a review panel harmonise divergent positions, ensuring the contentious tax bill align with national priorities
The senate has instructed its finance committee to halt further action on the proposed tax reform bills pending the outcome of a high-level meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
Announcing the decision during today’s plenary, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin revealed that a special committee has been formed to address contentious issues in the bill. The meeting is scheduled to take place tomorrow, Thursday, December 5th.
This move comes after extensive deliberations among lawmakers aimed at resolving disagreements over key provisions in the proposed legislation, which have recently sparked debates among stakeholders.
The special committee will be chaired by Sen. Abba Moro and includes Senators Tahir Monguno, Aliero Adamu, Orji Uzor Kalu, Seriake Dickson, Titus Zam, Yahaya Abdullahi, Solomon Olamilekan, Sani Musa, Tokunbo Abiru, and the senate leadership.
Additionally, the senate leadership has announced plans to hold a special meeting at the National Assembly to address all areas of contention. The meeting is intended to provide a platform for lawmakers to harmonise their positions, ensuring the bills align with national priorities while addressing stakeholder concerns.
Recall that the senate passed the contentious bills for second reading and referred further consideration to the finance committee which is expected to conduct public hearing on the draft legislations.
