The minister of livestock development assured that the sector has the capacity of generating N33 trillion to boost the economy.
The minister of livestock development, Idi Maiha, has stated that Nigeria’s livestock sector has the potential to boost the economy by N33 trillion if properly developed and harnessed.
Maiha made this remark during an interactive session with the House of Representatives committee on livestock development on Tuesday.
According to the minister, unlocking the sector’s potential could attract significant capital inflows, including foreign investments, adding that several investors have already expressed interest in ventures such as ranching and dairy farming.
Maiha emphasized the importance of state and local governments in this effort, calling for the establishment of dedicated livestock ministries and departments to foster better collaboration with the federal government.
“Currently, we are assessing state governments with existing ministries of livestock and fisheries. States without such ministries should take steps to establish them for a seamless relationship with the federal ministry of livestock development,” Maiha stated.
He highlighted that the sector has top political support: “This initiative has strong political backing from the president’s office and this committee. By unbundling the ministry, we can de-risk the sector and create a framework for significant investments in ranching and dairy farming.“
Chairman of the committee, Rep. Wale Raji, described the livestock sector as a vital contributor to economic growth and job creation and pledged the committee’s support for the ministry in implementing its plans promptly.
