Reps in orange mufflers in activism against GBV
Members of the House of Representative wore orange mufflers in solidarity with women in commemoration of the 16 days activism against Gender based Violence (GBV).
Coming under order 8 rule 6 to offer personal explanation, the spokesman of the House, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. (APC Ekiti), explained the reason behind members wearing the orange accessory. He said: “As part of the 16 days global advocacy against BBV, under the leadership of Hon. Tajudeen Abbas we have decided to show our solidarity against GBV in Nigeria,”. He added that the speaker led over 3000 persons on a march from the national assembly to the Nigerian Police force headquarters to lay a petition in this regard.
Reps side senate in sack of Umar Danladi
Just like the senate, the House of Representatives on Tuesday asked President Bola Tinubu to remove the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Mr. Danladi Umar, following allegations of misconduct.
This call was made pursuant to the invocation of Paragraph 17(3), Part 1, fifth schedule to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and section 22(3) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act. Presenting the motion, Rep. Julius Ihonvbere (APC Edo) reminded the House of the critical role of the Code of Conduct Tribunal in upholding public morality and ensuring accountability in government.
However, Rep. Ihonvbere expressed concern over recent actions by Mr. Umar that allegedly undermine the credibility of the institution. He cited an incident where the CCT chairman engaged in a public altercation with a security guard at Banex Plaza in Abuja. The incident drew national attention and led to his invitation by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions. Despite admitting involvement in the altercation during his initial appearance, Mr. Danladi allegedly refused to attend subsequent hearings, stalling the committee’s investigation.
Reps demand use of local languages in schools
The House of Representatives has called for the use of local languages as medium of instruction in primary and Junior Secondary Schools. The House urged the federal ministry of education to commence a pilot programme in selected schools across various states to assess the feasibility and benefits of utilizing local languages as a medium of instruction.
This call followed a motion by Rep. Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul. He noted that Nigeria boasts of an extraordinary linguistic diversity, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of the nation. However, he lamented that the current education system primarily employs English as the medium of instruction which he said has rendered the local languages like Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, ineffective and almost extinct.
Bago bags plaudits on agric strides
The House of Representatives on Tuesday commended Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, describing him as a model leader and a worthy ambassador of the House.
This praise came after Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) highlighted the governor’s achievements in his first year, including an agricultural revolution, infrastructural development, and promotion of religious tolerance. Benson also revealed that a Cameroonian Army General and Harvard graduate had lauded Bago’s developmental strides, urging other governors to emulate his example.
Rep. Saidu Musa Abdullahi (APC, Niger) added that Governor Bago has significantly uplifted Niger State, emphasizing its untapped potential in agriculture and its vast landmass, which constitutes about 10 percent of Nigeria’s territory. He expressed confidence in the governor’s vision for the state.
