The House plenary on Thursday focused on a made-in-Nigeria bill and Benue flood as well as land disputes in the middle-belt state

  • Reps address flood impact in Benue

Several flood impacts and land disputes in Benue State got the attention of the House on Thursday. Lawmakers urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide relief materials to cushion the hardship of people in the affected areas. The House also asked security agencies to beef up security in disputed areas. It also mandated the National Boundary Commission (NBC) to collaborate with other relevant agencies in the state to resolve the disputes. These resolutions were handed down from a motion of national importance by Rep. David Agada (APC Benue) on the “need to provide intervention in security and flood disasters in Oju/Obi federal constituency”. Leading the motion, Rep. Agada noted that the Aftermath of crises and flood disaster has led to loss of love and livelihood worth millions of Naira. Similarly, Rep. Terseer Ugbor (APC Benue), in another motion of national importance on the “need to address massive flooding challenge that affected the farmlands and wiped out .major roads in Benue state” said the flooding cause by over flowing of Benue river has become a national emergency that cannot continue be ignored. He noted that those roads were earmarked in the supplementary budget of the federal government under the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA). Following the adoption of the motion, the House resolved to invite FERMA to explain why the repair has not been executed.

  • Government MDAs should patronize made-in-Nigeria goods 

A bill seeking for government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to make mandatory procurement of locally made products and services has passed second reading in the House.

The consolidated bill was sponsored by Reps. Obinna Aguocha (LP Abia), Nnamdi Ezechi (PDP Delta), and Jesse Okey-Joe Onuakalusi (LP Lagos).

  • House Spokesman clarify controversies on Tinubu’s University bill

Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr. (APC Ekiti) addressed the press on Thursday to allay concerns about the House being a rubber stamp of the executive. “The House has pushed back on a lot from the executive,” he said. He also clarified the controversies surrounding a recent bill on establishing a President Tinubu university of languages in Aba. He said: “the House is not asking for a new university, the National Institute of Languages in Aba existed already, the House of only upgrading it to a university.”
