Key topics discussed in the House today included the swift passage of some establishment bills, a call to address delays in justice delivery, and efforts to tackle the issue of building collapses in Nigeria
- Bills scale second reading without debate
In what appears to have become the new norm in the House of Representatives, the speaker, Tajudeen Abbas again gave speedy passage to two establishment bills without debate at Wednesday’s plenary session.
The two bills titled: “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Federal Medical Centres Act and Establish Federal Medical Centre, Kachia, Kaduna State and for Related Matters (HB. 1365)” sponsored by Rep. Gabriel Saleh Zock (APC Kaduna) and “A Bill for an Act to Establish the African Aviation and Aerospace University, Abuja and provide for Administration and Discipline of Students of the University; and for Related Matters (HB. 745)” sponsored by Rep. Saidu Musa Abdullahi (APC Niger) both scaled second reading on the floor of the House. Speaker Abbas who presided over the plenary said the two bills being establishment bills need not to be debated thus passed both bills for second reading.
- Reps to probe incessant building collapse in Nigeria
The House of Representatives has directed its committees on works, environment, housing, and safety standards to investigate the frequent building collapses occurring across the country. The committees are tasked with identifying the root causes of these incidents and propose lasting solutions to address the issue. They are expected to submit their findings within four weeks for further legislative consideration.

This directive came after the adoption of a motion titled “Need to Investigate the Menace of Incessant Building Collapse in Nigeria,” sponsored by Rep. Aderemi Oseni (APC Oyo).
- Reps moves to address delayed justice delivery in Nigeria
The House of Representatives has tasked its committee on constitutional review with addressing the persistent delays in justice delivery in the country. The House stated that this move aims to restore public confidence in the judiciary. The committee chaired by the Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu (APC Abia) is expected to submit its report within four weeks for further legislative action. These resolutions were passed following the adoption of a motion titled “The Need to Review Nigeria’s Justice and Judicial System to Restore Public Trust in the Judiciary and Address Delays in Justice Delivery,” sponsored by Rep. Ganiyu Adele Ayuba (APC Lagos). The lawmaker expressed concern that delays in the judicial system are increasingly eroding public trust in the judiciary. He warned that if immediate steps are not taken to address the backlog in justice delivery, public confidence in the courts could be severely damaged, potentially leading people to resort to taking the law into their own hands.
