The Publish What You Pay (PWYP) Nigeria chapter has reiterated its dedication to enhancing governance in the extractive sector.
The Nigerian chapter of Publish What You Pay (PWYP), a leading global civil society coalition working for transparency in the extractive sector, has reaffirmed its commitment to drive robust engagement on the governance of the country’s extractive sector.
This commitment was announced following the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the group held in Lagos from October 3 to 4, 2024. The event was supported by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC-II), implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) with funding from the European Union, and attracted various stakeholders from the extractive industry.
The AGM also saw the election of new leadership for the coalition for the next three years. Dr. Erisa Danladi, executive director of Motherhen Development Foundation and member of NEITI’s National Stakeholder Working Group (NSWG), was elected as national coordinator. Mr. Tijah Bolton-Akpan, executive director of Policy Alert and National Steering Committee member of Nigeria’s Open Government Partnership (OGP), became deputy national coordinator, while Prof. Helen Bodunde, a professor at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta and the president of Education, Gender, Youth and Family Network (EduGUF-N), was appointed general secretary.
Additionally, a new board of trustees was formed, including Dr. Kelechi Okezie, Dr. Temitope Olaifa, Ms. Faith Nwadishi, and Dr. Mohammed Mustapha. Other members of the new Board are Mr. Godson Jim-Dorgu, Prof. Godwin Onu, and Mr. Mohammed Wuyo.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Danladi expressed gratitude for the foundational work of PWYP Nigeria’s founders and previous leaders. She emphasized the coalition’s values—transparency, accountability, and community empowerment—as essential for fostering a fairer nigeria.
“I am confident that together we can amplify our voices and drive impactful change. The values that PWYP represents – transparency, accountability, and community empowerment – are vital for fostering a fairer and more equitable Nigeria. I am committed to upholding these principles as we work together to ensure that revenues from our natural resources benefits all citizens”, she said
The group also issued a communique at the end of the event highlighting PWYP Nigeria’s renewed focus on influencing natural resource governance and related policy issues such as anti-corruption and climate justice, aligning these efforts with the broader sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The communique further noted that despite past challenges, PWYP Nigeria has emerged stronger and is poised to play a significant role in managing africa’s natural resources responsibly.
