10TH NASS REPORT CARD: 5 Taraba lawmakers have no bill in one year

Five lawmakers representing Taraba state sponsored zero bill as three senators and six House of Representatives’members processed a total of nine.

The primary responsibility of the legislature is making laws for the good governance and well-being of citizens hence the assessment of the people’s representatives.

Members of the 10th Senate and House of Representatives processed a total number of 1,650 bills in one year. Out of which, lawmakers representing Taraba state account for 9 bills representing 0.54 percent. However, 99 percent of these bills are still at the level of first reading, leaving just one passed and awaiting concurrence from the senate. The bills are sectorised under education, agriculture and health.

According to OrderPaper’s detailed analysis of bills processed between June 2023 and May 2024, the three senators representing the state account for four (4) of the 475 bills sponsored in the senate. The six (6) representatives from the state account for five (5) of the 1175 bills recorded in the green chamber.

First time Senator, David Jimkuta, representing Taraba south topped his colleagues from the state by sponsoring three (3) bills. although they are awaiting second reading. On his part, Senator Isa Lau representing Taraba north processed one (1) bill and Senator Manu Haruna representing Taraba central had zero bill.

In the green chamber, Rep. Mark Useni representing Donga/Ussa/Takum federal constituency took the lead with four (4) bills, 100 percent of which are awaiting second reading.  Rep. Jaafaru Yakubu representing Bali/Gassol constituency federal constituency sponsored one (1) bill.

On their part, these lawmakers failed to sponsor a bill: Reps. Abel Fuoh representing Gashaka/Kurmi/Sardauna serving his second term, Prince Dampar representing Ibi/Wukari, Mohammed Lauya representing Lau/Lamido/Ardo-Kola, and Sadiq Tafida representing Jalingo/Yorro/Zing.
