The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, 22 September, 2024, declared Senator Monday Okpebholo (APC, Edo Central) winner of the Edo State governorship election held on Saturday.

The governor-elect of Edo State, Okpebholo, received 291,667 votes from eleven of the state’s eighteen Local Government Areas (LGAs). The Peoples Democratic Party’s Asue Ighodalo received 247,274, winning seven LGAs, and the Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata received 22,761 votes.

Here are 10 things to know about Edo governor-elect, Okpebholo.

  • Senator Monday Okpebholo also known as Akpakomiza, was born on 29 August 1970 in Uromi community in Uwessan-Irrua, Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo state.
  • Okpebholo attended Uromi Community Primary School and Ujabhole Community Secondary School, respectively, in Uwesan-Irrua, Esan Central LGA.
  • He graduated from the University of Abuja with a degree in business administration. At the same university, he continued his education by acquiring a Master’s degree in Policy and Leadership Studies.
  • Senator Okpebholo joined politics in 2003 when he ran for the House of Representatives on the People’s Democratic Party’s platform (PDP).
  • Okpebholo won the Edo Central Senatorial District seat under the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 25 February 2023.
  • His victory in the Edo Central election broke the 24-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party in the zone.
  • On  13 June 2023, he was inaugurated as the Senator representing Edo Central Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly and chaired the Senate Committee on Public Procurement.
