The minister of state for education, Yusuf Tanko Sununu, is one of those who made the transition from the legislature to the executive under the Tinubu administration. Here’s what to know about him in this Ex-NASS members’ series
Early life and professional background…
Yusuf Tanko Sununu, born 2 February 1967 in Kebbi State, earned his medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Maiduguri. He pursued further training and specialisation, which includes obtaining a postgraduate degree in public health.
He also served as the personal physician to the governor of Kebbi state in Birnin Kebbi from May 2003 to April 2005. Prior to this role, he worked as a medical officer at the General Hospital Argungu from January 2000 to March 2003 which shows his extensive experience in healthcare administration and service delivery.
His Politics…
Sununu served in the House of Representatives under the All Progressives Congress (APC) banner during the 9th National Assembly from 2019 to 2023, representing Yauri/Shanga/Ngaski federal constituency. As a trained medical doctor, he utilised his expertise to contribute to health-related legislation and policies. His medical and public health expertise influenced his legislative work, particularly in health-related matters.
On 21 August 2023, he was appointed minister of state for education in President Bola Tinubu‘s cabinet. Last year, the former lawmaker expressed concerns over Nigeria’s basic education sector at the 25th quarterly meeting of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) management. Despite substantial federal investments, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, high dropout rates, and a large number of out-of-school children persist. Dr. Sununu emphasised the urgent need for collaborative efforts and innovative strategies between federal and state governments to improve basic education delivery and elevate learning standards. His call to action aimed at ensuring every child receives quality education, regardless of background or status, to address Nigeria’s educational challenges effectively.
Transitioning from legislative duties to executive responsibilities…
As a legislator, Sununu contributed to health-related legislation and policies through his medical background. Now his appointment as junior for education indicates his move from legislative duties to executive responsibilities, making him a FLEX candidate whose performance will be monitored.
