Another Rep Member, Ekene Abubakar Adams, dies

Tragedy has struck the Nigerian House of Representatives as Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams, representing Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State, has been confirmed dead.

Adams passed away on Tuesday morning, July 16, 2024, following a brief illness.

Adams, aged 39, was a notable figure in Nigerian sports before venturing into politics. He served as the general manager of Kada City FC and Remo Stars, and his contributions to sports administration were widely recognized. In the 2023 general elections, he was elected to the House of Representatives under the Labour Party (LP) banner. Due to his extensive background in sports, he was appointed chairman of the House of Representatives committee on sports, a role he was said to have diligently fulfilled until his passing.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., expressed profound sorrow over Adams’ death: “The House of Representatives is saddened to announce the passing of a dear member of the 10th Assembly, Rep. Ekene Abubakar Adams (LP, Kaduna), who died early Tuesday, at the age of 39. Rep. Adams was a dedicated public servant, passionate sports administrator, and kind philanthropist who, until his demise, chaired the House Committee on Sports. He was a first-term member of the House of Representatives, representing the good people of Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency of Kaduna State.”

Rotimi continued, “The dear departed lawmaker was a kind and gentle humanitarian, loved by all who knew him. His dedication to the development of grassroots sports in Nigeria was unwavering, and his contributions to the House will be deeply missed. The House of Representatives extends heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, constituents of our dear colleague, as well as the good people and Government of Kaduna State. May God grant his family and loved ones the strength to bear this irreparable loss, and may his soul find rest in the bosom of the Almighty.”

Adams‘ death marks the second loss for the House of Representatives in just one week. Last Wednesday, July 10, Rep. Olaide Akinremi, popularly known as Jagaban, from Oyo State, also passed away. This series of tragic events has left the legislative body mourning.
