The House of Representatives issued an official statement to confirm the death of a Nigeria Customs Service official during a hearing on Tuesday
A senior official of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Andrew Essien, died on Tuesday after collapsing while being questioned by the House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts.
The engagements which occurred around 1.00pm when the customs officer was fielding questions from members of the committee when he coughed and slumped. Despite the immediate and frantic efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, he unfortunately passed away.
Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., House Spokesman in a statement confirmed his passing on Tuesday, June 24, 2024.
Rotimi noted that the official developed sudden health complications during the legislative engagement. “Despite the immediate and diligent efforts of first responders and medical personnel at the National Assembly Clinic, he unfortunately passed away. Out of respect for the family, the official’s name will not be disclosed at this time.
“The House of Representatives extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time. We recognize the significant contributions he made to the Nigeria Customs Service and to our nation.
“The House of Representatives stands ready to support efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and is cooperating fully with all relevant authorities to ensure all necessary protocols are followed.” the statement said.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas (APC Kaduna) mourned the passing of the official.
Expressing his condolences, Rep. Abbas said, “We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of a dedicated public servant. Our hearts go out to his family during this difficult time.”
