Governor Yusuf declared, “With the full support of the kingmakers, I have approved the reappointment of Malam Sanusi Lamido as Emir of Kano”
In a historic reversal, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Thursday signed the law reinstating Lamido Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano, four years after his controversial removal.
Governor Yusuf declared, “With the full support of the kingmakers, I have approved the reappointment of Malam Sanusi Lamido,” affirming Sanusi’s return to his former position following the signing of the Kano State Emirate Council (Repeal) Bill 2024 into law.
The new legislation dismantles the Kano State Emirates Council Law of 2019, which had established four additional emirates—Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya—by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. This move significantly altered the traditional structure of the Kano emirate, leading to Sanusi’s dethronement in March 2020 after a protracted conflict with Ganduje.
The Kano State House of Assembly passed the repeal bill earlier on Thursday during a plenary session. Deputy Speaker Muhammad Butu highlighted that the bill’s passage aims to restore Kano’s historical prestige, which had been diluted by the division of the emirate into five separate entities.
The restoration of a singular emirate, according to Majority Leader Lawal Yan Gurasa, will revive the unity and historical significance of Kano.
“The abolished Emirates did nothing but create division among the indigenes of Kano. The unity which was visible for thousands of years in Kano was divided. We are now reverting to our old historical background; one Kano, one people, one Emir,” Yan Gurasa stated.
Governor Yusuf has given the now-dissolved emirate councils 48 hours to vacate the palace.
