Incessant outage of electricity in Niger State
Rep. Baraje Yusuf Kure

Rep. Baraje Yusuf Kure (APC Niger), has raised serious concerns about the worsening state of electricity supply in Minna and its surrounding areas, despite the presence of significant hydroelectric power facilities such as Kainji, Jebba, and Shiroro Dams.

In response, the House of Representatives has directed the Committee on Power to engage with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), and Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to identify and resolve the issue of inadequate power supply.

Leading the debate, Rep. Kure said, “Without incidences of grid collapses, residents and businesses in Minna metropolis and its environs have continued to experience prolonged power outages despite being consumers under different tariff bands.”

He emphasized the irony that Niger State, home to major power generation infrastructure like the Kainji, Jebba, and Shiroro Dams, suffers from severe electricity supply issues. This situation undermines both residential life and business activities in the region.

The House has therefore mandated the Committee on Power to monitor efforts to restore stable electricity in Minna urgently. The committee is also tasked with investigating the root causes of the poor electricity supply and reporting their findings within two weeks.
