Rep. Regina Akume is the wife of Sen. George Akume, the former governor of Benue State and the incumbent Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). Over the years, she has proved to be a powerful anchor for the astute Benue politician’s uncommon progressive socio-political trajectory.
Born on 15 May 1955 in Benue State, Regina is a first-term member of the House of Representatives in the 10th National Assembly, representing the Gboko/Tarkai Federal Constituency of Benue State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She served as first lady in Benue State from 1999 to 2007 when her husband was the governor. She defeated one of the most experienced lawmakers from Benue State, John Dyegh in the February 2023 elections into the House of Representatives. She’s a first term lawmaker.
The former first lady was appointed by the incumbent Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas to chair the ad–hoc committee on Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on the extension of the validity period of UTME results for at least three (3) years and conduct of the examination twice annually. The committee has since submitted its report to the House.
Rep. Regina Akume is the chairman of the House Committee on National Agency for Food, Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Her legislative agenda includes to empower the women and youth of her constituency as well as influence the provision of critical rural infrastructure, basic health care facilities and basic education to the underprivileged.
However, she is yet to sponsor a bill or a motion 9 months since the current assembly kicked off. As one of the 13 female members of the House, eyes will be on Regina Akume in the current assembly.
